Single Tooth Implants

It's almost impossible to feel confident in your smile if you're missing teeth. Cosmetic dental implants can change that. With cosmetic dental implants, you get the best in function and aesthetics. Cosmetic dental implants are securely anchored in the jaw bone for maximum comfort and durability. The replacement tooth, or dental crown, is made of a tooth-colored porcelain so that your cosmetic dental implants look, feel, and function just like your real teeth!

If you're missing a tooth and want the very best dentistry has to offer, single-tooth implants can be perfect for you. Single-tooth implants act as tooth roots for replacement teeth. They are securely anchored into the jaw, and topped with a dental crown for the very best in look, feel, and function. Single-tooth implants also offer several advantages over other tooth replacement options, such as dental bridges and partial dentures as they permit surrounding teeth and the jawbone to be better preserved. Single-tooth implants are also easier to clean, and can even outlast bridges and dentures by about 10 years!

Mini Dental Implants (MDIs)

Mini Dental Implants (MDIs) have changed the face of the implant placement process. Unlike full implant placement where multiple dental visits are required, MDIs eliminate the need for surgery. The development of long term MDIs now allows the dentist to place anchors in the jaw during one noninvasive treatment. The most common use for MDIs is the stabilization of dentures and overdentures. MDIs firmly anchor the dental prosthesis, which means there is no longer any need to suffer with ill-fitting, loose dentures!

What is the configuration of mini dental implants? An MDI is a tiny dental implant (similar to a screw) that is designed to act in place of a natural tooth root. MDIs are generally constructed from titanium and are either sprayed with calcium phosphate, or contain it along the length of the “screw” portion. The design and structure of MDIs promotes quick healing and long lasting results.

The head portion of the implant looks very much like a ball. This “ball” fits firmly into the retaining mechanism, and together these structures hold the dentures at a designated level. This allows the dentures to sit comfortably on the gum tissue, and make them able to withstand significant amounts of pressure and natural force.

What are the advantages of MDI placement?

MDIs are a true innovation for people who are reluctant to have invasive dental surgery, and for denture wearers. One significant advantage MDIs have over full implants is that they offer a viable treatment choice for patients who have experienced extensive bone loss. Depending on the quality and density of jawbone available at the implant site, four of these mini implants may be implanted at one time. Unlike full implants, MDIs don’t require invasive surgery, which makes MDIs a gentler option. MDIs also minimize cost. Full-sized implants can be expensive to place, especially if many visits are required. The most common use for MDIs is to stabilize a lower denture, however they can be placed anywhere in the mouth.

How are mini dental implants placed?

The entire mini dental implant placement procedure takes approximately one hour. Generally, in the case of lower jaw implants, four MDIs will be placed about 5mm apart. Prior to inserting MDIs, the dentist will use many diagnostic and planning tools to find the optimal place to implant them.

FAQ Questions

How long do dental implants take to heal?

After 2 weeks, most patients are fully recovered. The implant site may feel slightly tender to the touch, but should feel completely healed and normal. The implant will continue to heal and bond with the jaw bone over the following 3-6 months, but the initial healing process will be over.

Can you eat after a single tooth implant?

Generally, you'll need to eat very soft foods and a liquid diet for up to a week after your appointment. After 1-2 weeks, you can start introducing tougher, chewier foods into your diet.

Can I drink hot beverages after dental implant?

After implant surgery, your gums are healing from having an incision made through them. It is vitally important that you avoid drinking hot coffee, tea or hot chocolate after the procedure itself for up to two or three days.

How long does it take for stitches to dissolve after dental implants?

If you had stitches placed in your gums they will dissolve and fall out on their own in approximately 1 to 2 weeks. You may experience a few drops of blood in your saliva or minor discomfort when this occurs. If they come out earlier it is not usually a concern unless persistent bleeding occurs.

Are dental implants removable like dentures or do they stay in your mouth?

No, dental implants are fixed solidly in the bone and allow teeth to be replaced in a manner that is closest to natural teeth.
